Ypsomed AG is an internationally active medical technology company headquartered in Burgdorf, Switzerland. With over 2,000 employees, the company develops and manufactures solutions for self-medication at several international locations and supports people in managing their therapy independently and reliably. IT serves as a central foundation for secure and efficient work processes.

Initial Situation and Objective

A workplace that has evolved over time is reaching its limits.

As Ypsomed expanded internationally, the demands on its digital workplace also increased. The client environment, which had evolved over the years, resulted in a high administrative burden, hindered standardized processes, and made the deployment of new devices time-consuming. At the same time, demands for cybersecurity, international scalability, and location-independent work were continuously increasing. The existing environment was increasingly reaching its limits. Ypsomed was therefore looking for a modern, secure, and future-proof solution. The goal was a cloud-based platform that automatically provisions devices worldwide, manages them centrally, and consistently protects them according to the zero-trust principle. In addition, existing management processes were to be modernized, local administrator rights reduced, and client management largely automated.

Solution

A modern workplace that scales globally.

Ypsomed has fundamentally modernized its digital workplace and established a centralized, cloud-based modern workplace. To achieve this, the existing client management processes were replaced by Microsoft Intune and Microsoft Entra ID. New Windows 11 devices are now automatically provisioned using Windows Autopilot, configured according to defined corporate standards, and integrated into the central management and security framework as soon as they are first started. Employees receive a largely preconfigured workstation and can become productive within a short time. At the same time, the manual workload for IT is significantly reduced.

Another key focus was on endpoint security. The new workplace is consistently based on the zero-trust principle. Identities, devices, and access are continuously verified and centrally secured. Modern authentication with Windows Hello for Business, BitLocker encryption, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, Conditional Access, and Windows LAPS protect users, devices, and corporate data throughout the entire device lifecycle. Security policies can be centrally managed and uniformly enforced worldwide.

At the same time, Ypsomed modernized its application management. More than 200 applications were standardized and integrated into the central software distribution system. Standard software is installed automatically, and approximately 70% of applications are updated automatically. Through a self-service portal, employees can independently install approved software without requiring local administrator rights. This reduces the burden on IT while simultaneously improving the user experience.

An important milestone was the first international rollout in China. There, the new platform was put into production for the first time under real-world conditions. The successful rollout confirmed that the Modern Workplace can be reliably deployed, centrally managed, and securely operated even at international locations. Ypsomed thus laid the foundation for the phased rollout in Switzerland and at other locations worldwide. Together, the team developed a scalable operating model that simplifies future rollouts, sustainably reduces the burden on day-to-day operations, and lays the groundwork for the future development of the digital workplace.

Project

From concept to international rollout.

The project began in 2024 with the design of the new Modern Workplace. Together, Ypsomed and Epic Fusion defined the target architecture and developed a future-proof operating model for the digital workplace. The new platform was then gradually built, tested, and integrated into the existing IT landscape. At the same time, processes for device management, endpoint security, and software distribution were standardized and modernized.

The successful production deployment in China confirmed that the new platform performs well even under real-world conditions and laid the foundation for its rollout in Switzerland and worldwide.

A key success factor was the close collaboration between Ypsomed’s Client Engineering team and Epic Fusion. Requirements were jointly evaluated, technical decisions coordinated, and new features tested under real-world conditions. At the same time, the Client Engineering team and the Service Desk were specifically empowered to independently operate, support, and continuously develop the Modern Workplace. The result was not only a modern technical platform but also a sustainable operating model. Today, Ypsomed has the know-how to independently further develop its modern workplace while also being able to draw on the expertise of Epic Fusion as a long-term strategic partner and implementation partner.
