y 2026, Microsoft 365 Copilot will be more than just an assistant. It will work alongside you. With Claude Opus 4.7, multi-model intelligence, and agent-based features in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Copilot will take on real tasks: planning, executing, and delivering. All of this is done in accordance with the privacy and compliance standards you have come to expect from Microsoft.

Microsoft 365 Copilot: The AI ​​Workplace comes of Age.

Q1 2026 marks a turning point. Microsoft 365 Copilot is evolving from an assistant to a true digital colleague – a system that plans, acts, and delivers results independently. At the same time, Microsoft is opening the door to true model diversity for the first time: Since April 16, 2026, Claude Opus 4.7 from Anthropic, one of the world's most powerful AI models, has been directly available in Copilot with the strictest enterprise data privacy guarantees.

The right AI at the right Time: Multi-model Intelligence.

Not every task requires the same AI. An email brainstorming session has different requirements than hours of regulatory research. Microsoft responds with model choice: Depending on the tool, different GPT and Claude models are available including Copilot Chat, Researcher Agent, Cowork, and Edit Mode in Excel.

NEW: Same-day integration of new models Microsoft is aiming for same-day integration of new models. Claude Opus 4.7 was already available in Copilot on the day of its release – as was GPT-5 before it.

Data Privacy first: Anthropic as a Microsoft Subprocessor.

Since 7th January 2026, Anthropic has officially operated as a Microsoft subprocessor. What this means for you:

✅ Your data never leaves the Microsoft security boundary
✅ Microsoft Product Terms and Data Processing Agreements (DPAs) also apply to Claude models
✅ Enterprise Data Protection is fully active
✅ Microsoft Customer Copyright Commitment (CCC) provides legal protection
✅ No separate contracts with Anthropic are required

Important for EU/EFTA/Switzerland: Claude models are disabled by default and are not part of the EU Data Boundary. Opt-in via the Microsoft 365 Admin Center by global administrators is required. Not available in government clouds.

Copilot Researcher: Two AI's are better than one.

The Researcher Agent uses multi-model intelligence – two models work in parallel:

  • Critique: GPT conducts the research, while Claude critically reviews completeness, sources, and argumentation.

  • Council: Both models process the same prompt independently – you see where they agree and where they disagree.

Practical example: You are researching regulatory requirements for a new product in multiple markets. Critique ensures that no sources are missing. Council shows you whether both models reach the same conclusion or where clarification is needed.

Copilot Cowork – from Assistant to active Collaborator.

Cowork is not just another feature. It is a new way of working. You define the goal, and Cowork plans and executes it. This happens in four phases::

  1. Planning: Cowork analyzes the task and automatically creates a work plan.

  2. Execution: Integrated across apps including Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, SharePoint, and Calendar.

  3. Checkpoints: At critical points, Cowork waits for your approval.

  4. Delivery: A finished, documented result.

Preparing the quarterly review

You say: «Prepare the quarterly review for next week.»

Cowork gathers relevant data, analyzes existing documents, creates a presentation, prepares meetings, and drafts communication materials. When decisions need to be made, Cowork will get back to you.

Clean up your calendar

Cowork analyzes your week, identifies conflicts, and suggests adjustments. After your approval, meetings are rescheduled, focus time slots are blocked, and participants are notified.

Status update for stakeholders

Cowork summarizes project progress from emails, documents and meetings and creates a ready-to-send update – including a clean structure and correct context.

Agentic Work in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint – now available.

New since 22 April 2026: Copilot's agentic capabilities in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are now generally available for all Microsoft 365 Copilot Premium, Personal, and Family subscriptions. Copilot now performs multi-step actions directly within the document: formatting, restructuring, creating visuals, and transforming data without copy-paste detours.

With Wave 3 of Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft takes a decisive step forward: AI is no longer just an assistant that answers queries. It becomes an active employee that independently performs multi-stage, long-term tasks. Copilot Cowork takes over complex workflows directly in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, accesses your company data, coordinates tasks across various applications, and keeps you, the decision-maker, in control at all times. For managers, this means less time on administrative tasks and more focus on what matters most.
